The Cabildo has recently presented the programme for the 2018-2019 season of Ópera de Tenerife. It includes classical Italian essentials like Rossini, Donizetti or Puccini, in addition to a wide choice of activities related to different fields of artistic production and learning. The details were disclosed by the President of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, the Island Director for Culture and Education José Luis Rivero, and the intendant of Ópera de Tenerife, Alejandro Abrante. Big operas, productions for families and the international learning academy are the core of their proposal, which is committed to keeping on attracting new audiences and venues.

Carlos Alonso stated that “Ópera de Tenerife is the most important cultural project on the island. It brings together Auditorio de Tenerife and Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, a successful duo of international renown” adding that “this allows us to attract first rate productions, titles, and artists, which in turn have a positive effect on the Canaries cultural industry led by Auditorio de Tenerife”.

The Cabildo continues its support to young audiences and, one more season, they can purchase their Young Club Ópera package for under 27 for just 20 Euros. This will give them access to the programme but also to the performances of Ópera en Familia and Concert by the Winners of the 6th International Singing Competition, in addition to a full range of experiences including meetings with artists or visits to the backstage.  For the general public, the most economical ticket is kept at 15 Euros while the most expensive seats will be 5 Euros cheaper than the current season. The president also highlighted that holders of the Ten+ Mayor card will enjoy a 70 per cent discount.

José Luis Rivero stressed that “the foundations have been laid for the Auditorio de Tenerife to fall within the concept Opera House. This year it will be further internationalised as the transatlantic bonds are widened to include Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and Teatro Argentino de La Plata”. Mr. Rivero also referred to “continuing with the policy of taking Ópera de Tenerife to new venues on the Island, like Magma Arte&Congresos and Puerto de la Cruz, by means of the Opera Pocket format, in addition to the initiative Ópera en Ruta or opera recitals, thus complying with the parameters of the Tenerife 2030 strategy”.

Alejando Abrante, before spelling out the main features of the programme for next season, underlined that “the intense work Ópera de Tenerife has been carrying out since 2013 has led to the international consolidation of the island regarding opera. Rather than just being a springboard, artists, musical and stage directors who are well-established internationally, return to the Island thanks to its high production quality”.

As usual, the first production is by the young talents who are part of the sixth year of Opera (e)Studio, the comprehensive academy -which is directed by Giulio Zappa- that boosts the professional development of artists at the early stages of their careers. First comes Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers, followed by the moving opera by Donizetti Lucia di Lammermoor; this first quarter closes with Rossini’s The Journey to Reims, which will bring together a cast entirely made up of former members of Opera (e)Studio, to celebrate its fifth anniversary.

The princely story Turandot, by Puccini, will be in Tenerife in March 2019, to be followed by Hansel and Gretel, by Humperdinck on stage in April in the Ópera en Familia (Family Opera) format. As part of the continued support to zarzuela, Penella’s classic The Wildcat has been included in the programme.

In the new opera season, the sixth Tenerife International Opera Singing Competition will take place. This will be a good chance to enjoy a range of great opera voices, in addition to Masterclasses in voice and interpretation improvement for young talents to be held in February.  There will also be different itinerant shows by Opera Pocket –with the revival of Auditorio de Tenerife’s production, The Traviata- to be performed in new venues on the island. The learning activity Ópera en Ruta, will show new audiences the hidden details of the opera world and of the titles offered.
