He nacido para verte sonreír [I was born to see your smile] is a contemporary melodrama written by Santiago Loza, a key figure in current Latin America theatre scene.
Directed by award-winner Pablo Messiez, (several Premios Max for La piedra oscura), and himself a playwright, he admires and has followed Loza’s career for years. Isabel Ordaz and Fernando Delgado-Hierro are part of the cast of this production, which is returning to Teatro de la Abadía on 11 January 2018.
One of the good points in Loza’s text is to have made the mother an absolutely contradictory character. Even the way she talks portrays her paradox: she goes from everyday life, household habits, to the mysterious and archaic, becoming a tragic character when she suddenly decides to drive away from her what she loves most. From the most conservative stance he moves to that which is ideologically questionable, as the unexpected is another key feature of the play. He questions madness and its limits, going deep into the complexity of human relationships.
