This weekend, Carmen Fumero’s and Chang Dance Theatre’s companies will offer two shows

The premiere of Peces Borrosos, headlined by Carmen Fumero and Chang Dance Theatre, will open the Auditorio de Tenerife’s new season. Performances take place in the Symphony Hall on Saturday the 6th and Sunday the 7th at 7.30 p.m. Tickets for both shows are now on sale at a single price of 15 euros.

The show is a joint production of the Auditorio de Tenerife and the cultural association Ritmos del Mundo, with the collaboration of Chang Dance Studio, Centro Coreográfico Canal and the Eduardo Úrculo Cultural Centre.

Carmen Fumero and Miguel Zomas are the joint artistic directors of Peces borrosos, a choreography directed by Fumero, who is Tenerife-born. The work is to be interpreted by Dácil González, Chien-Hao Chang, Chien-Chih Chang, Ho-Chien Chang, Carmen Fumero and Miguel Zomas. The score is credited to Iván Cebrián, Alfredo Díez is in charge of lighting, and Yaiza Pinillos is the wardrobe designer.

According to Carmen Fumero, ‘Peces Borrosos marks a turning point in our artistic path as a company,’ and she adds that ‘this production arrives at a significant moment for us.’ She also appreciates the collaboration with the Auditorio de Tenerife on this project. Fumero finishes by complimenting the performance space, saying that ‘debuting at the Symphony Hall enables our growth as creators.’

Miguel Zomas expresses his enthusiasm for the debut, noting that ‘having the opportunity to perform at the Auditorio de Tenerife is closely linked to having the necessary resources.’ He further explains that ‘this ensures the project starts under ideal conditions, enabling it to develop develop most healthily.’

Dácil González, who was awarded the National Dance Prize in 2019, states that for her, ‘participating in Peces Borrosos under the direction of Carmen Fumero and Miguel Zomas is a wonderful gift.’ The regional dancer appreciates the enriching process of sharing this work with them and the Chang Dance Theatre company from Taiwan.

González remarks that ‘the blending of two markedly different cultural languages is very compelling; all involved are brilliant and truly inspiring companions.’ She adds that ‘the support from the Auditorio de Tenerife and the chance to premiere there truly makes us feel at home.’

Peces borrosos (Blurry Fish) is a metaphor that brings blurriness into focus. It is about the unsaid; about looking for fish in a pond that swim in the same way that people go through life: blurry on the surface but deep and orderly at the bottom. From these footprints, the water that generates life and movement emerges. It is at this moment that the lines between walking and swimming are blurred. Something becomes blurry and diluted, but it remains.

Many constellations may be formed within a place, within a pond, and many combinations of colours may come of one union with another. The creatures of this painting appear before us, immersed in that great, empty space. However, when we contemplate those fish, their presence immediately brings water to mind: Don’t speak to the fish in the pond about the sea.

Founded in Taipei City in 2011, Chang Dance Theatre comprises four brothers: Chien-Hao, Chien-Chih, Chien-Kuei, and Ho-Chien, all graduates of the Dance Department at Taipei National University of the Arts. This singular familial bond has given rise to a unique artistic approach, in which blood ties are intertwined with artistic language imbued with sensitivity, collaboration, and a shared identity. Beyond the confines of the dance company, the Chang brothers are also freelance dancers on domestic and international circuits, and their company has gained a reputation for the creative and interpretive capacity of its members promoting interdisciplinary experimentation. The works of this company feature dance that is sincere and brimming with humanity, in which each piece manifests fragments of their life stories.

The alliance between Chang Dance Theatre and Carmen Fumero Company developed naturally, stemming from their connections at festivals and choreography competitions in Spain and Europe. In 2019, the two companies coincided at a gala and embarked on a joint tour of Taiwan and Malaysia, during which they began to forge a close relationship. A year later, Miguel Zomas was invited to Taipei City to participate in La Cara, their first collaborative creative project. In 2023, their association evolved into a direct collaboration on the project Peces borrosos, where their human and artistic affinity became the driving force behind their joint creation. Their shared definition of dance unites them: honest, organic and focused on the encounter.
