Ópera de Tenerife’s last event of the year features the score by Pablo Sorozábal and the words of Pío Baroja as its main highlights.

Madrid’s bohemian scene comes alive at the Auditorio de Tenerife’s Symphony Hall in Adiós a la bohemia, a small-scale opera by Pablo Sorozábal with a script by Pío Baroja. Ópera de Tenerife closes the year with this production by Donostia Musika, featuring a theatrical prologue that depicts a dialogue between both creators. The shows will be performed on Friday (November 5) and Saturday (November 6) at 7.30 p.m.

The continuous narrative blends seamlessly with the music and staging, built on Pío Baroja’s strong text. Pablo Sorozábal’s musical score masterfully conveys the characters’ emotions. With its ironic stamp, the work features romances, duets, habaneras, and various references to folk music, while also revealing a Central European influence in the musical textures and orchestral sonorities, knowledge Sorozábal gained during his studies in Germany.

All of this will be prefaced by a theatrical prologue featuring a conversation between Pío Baroja and Pablo Sorozábal, presenting the origins of this ‘ópera chica’, as Sorozábal termed it, set in a modest local café full of character and countless stories.

Adiós a la bohemia is an intimate and melancholic proposal with moments of humour that reveal how captivating the lives of those who pursue their dreams can be, even when they do fall short. The work explores themes of failure, frustration, and the alienation that often follows.

The dramatic vision is provided by stage director Ignacio García and his team, composed of stage designer Alejandro Contreras, costume designer Ana Ramos, and lighting designer Juanjo Llorens, with the lighting re-staging on this occasion by Jesús Díaz.

This production’s musical direction is led by Víctor Pablo Pérez, Honorary Conductor of the Sinfónica de Tenerife, who will conduct both performances. On this occasion, the Main Choir Ópera de Tenerife-Intermezzo will be under the direction of Santiago Otero.

Leading the cast are soprano Jaquelina Livieri as Trini, baritone Juan Jesús Rodríguez portraying Ramón, bass Javier Castañeda as the vagabond, and tenor Joan Laínez in a double role, both as the gentleman reading El Heraldo and as Pablo Sorozábal in the opening scene. Juan Maroto takes the role of the man in the cloak, with tenor David Barrera as the tough guy, and Salvador Rodríguez as the young man. Rounding off the prologue is actor Juan Calot as Pío Baroja, the choir’s tenor Anatael Herrera as an admirer of Tiziano, and soprano Arantxa Cooper, supported onstage by pianist Jorge Giménez and violinist Irina Peña.
