Gaviera
theatral company
Theatrical troupe Gaviera is a creation of Adriana Cortés and Ylenia de Luis, two actresses who received training at Escuela de Actores de Canarias (2018–22). The troupe’s name is the feminine form of the Spanish word gaviero , which means a sailor who observes the horizon from above. As a metaphor, it aptly describes Gaviera’s method of surveying the artistic panorama in a tireless pursuit of creation. The troupe focusses on its original staging of works, drawing inspiration from research of physical theatre, performance, plastic arts and movement arts. This interdisciplinary approach is the basis of an onstage language that proposes formal experimentation and the construction of solid visual and corporeal universes. The troupe’s first mid-sized production, titled Sor Juana (2023), is a contemporary portrayal of the nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in an original dramatic work written as a collaborative effort. In 2024, Gaviera produced the staging of Fácil de matar, written by Margot Machado and directed by Vicente Ayala. This consolidated the troupe’s collaboration with professional organisations in the archipelago such as Canarias Escribe Teatro. Gaviera has also taken part in pedagogic initiatives such as Volar ligera (2025), which was performed at educational centres as part of the programme Juventud a Escena, hosted by Espacio La Granja and directed by Rosa Escrig. The directors also promote Mascherata, an online shop selling handcrafted masks that was opened in 2024. Through it, they develop original pieces and collaborate with professionals from diverse artistic sectors, making this activity part of their research.Gaviera continues to consolidate its presence in Canarian theatre through projects that combine creation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
