Ácido folclórico
Synopsis
Dailo Barco and Claudia Bliss are to take part in an artist-residency programme in the La Salita hall of Auditorio de Tenerife between 7 and 14 January 2026, concluding with an exhibition titled Ácido folclórico. This residency for Canarian creators in the performing arts is organized in collaboration with the Laboratorio de Artes Vivas y Ciudadanía de Canarias (LAV-C), led by cultural administrator Beatriz Bello and artist Darío Bardam.
Ácido folclórico is an audio-visual project designed for the dancefloor that explores the relationship between traditional and contemporary Canarian cultures. DJ and electronic music artist Claudia Bliss and VJ and filmmaker Dailo Barco will present a live set featuring archival material. They will combine audio and visuals to create an immersive experience, blending elements of Canarian culture with electronic rhythms such as techno, house, break, and electro. This approach offers a new way to experience Canarian identity and territory through community-based experimentation.
For the project’s musical content, they will rely on acclaimed creators from the archipelago’s electronic scene, generating synergies around a common thread of inspired rhythms, accompanied by audio samples recorded in the archipelago. Projected alongside this will be choreographies of folkloric dances, as well as landscapes, traditions, and bodies featured in old films made in the Canaries.
Ácido folclórico uses audio samples and footage to initiate a transformative process, presenting contemporary exhibitions rooted in the past. The project highlights historic events like the Manifesto of El Hierro in 1976, traditional activities such as the ‘canto de la morena’ song of Canarian fishermen, references to the ‘tagoror’ where the island’s indigenous inhabitants gathered in assembly, ancestral rituals like the ‘velorio de los angelitos’, Carnaval festivities, and tributes to cultural icons including Valentina de Sabinosa, César Manrique, Tony Gallardo, and Manuel Padorno.
This effort to reinterpret the past draws on archival research to find images and sounds that inspire present-day responses. The audio-visual experiment aims to transform the stage into a dynamic, danceable space infused with memory and a vision for the future.
