The Auditorio de Tenerife hosts Francis Hernández’s new work and separate concerts by Marta Klimasara and Marianna Bednarska

This week, the Audiorio de Tenerife presents three concerts as part of the Tenerife Contemporary Music Festival (FMUC), all taking place in the Chamber Hall at 7.30 pm. The event opens on Friday (5th) with the premiere of a new work by Francis Hernández. This is followed by a concert featuring Polish percussionist Marta Klimasara on Saturday (6th), and the final concert by Marianna Bednarska on Sunday (7th).

Variaciones sobre temas canarios (Variations on Canarian Themes), a newly commissioned work by Francis Hernández, will be premiered. Hernández, a pianist, composer and musical director from La Orotava, has created a suite performed by the Hesperia Brass Band (HBB) under the artistic direction of Domenica Giannone. Beginning with motifs inspired by Teobaldo Power’s Cantos canarios, the piece takes audiences on a journey through Canarian folklore, weaving in African-American rhythmic elements, passages evoking the sea, and harmonies reminiscent of orchestral jazz.

Marta Klimasara, an award-winning Polish percussionist of international renown, will perform alongside Andrea Domínguez, María Vera, and Verónica Cagigao. Drawing on her experience in France, Sweden, Japan, and South Africa, as well as her success in international competitions, Klimasara will present works that highlight the evolution of contemporary percussion. The program features Xenakis’s compositions, the body percussion piece ‘Corporel,’ and classical works such as ‘Dances of the Earth and Fire.’ Additionally, percussion students from the Professional Music Conservatory of Tenerife and the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Canary Islands will perform.

Marianna Bednarska, a distinguished young Polish percussionist, will close the 2026 FMUC edition at the Auditorium. Bednarska is active as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, and percussion teacher, and is endorsed by Yamaha and Kolberg Mallet. Among her accolades are the laureateship at the 74th Geneva International Music Competition (2019), the Prix Credit Suisse Jeunes Solistes (2019), and 24 first prizes in international competitions. The program features works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Georges Aperghis, Christos Hatzis, Astor Piazzolla, and Jesús Torres. Students from the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Canarias will provide a supporting performance.
