The show, by the Portuguese theatrical troupe Hotel Europa has been scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday at the Auditorio de Tenerife
La Salita, the auditorium’s theatre venue and programme, will host an examination of forest-fire management this weekend with the show Terra do fogo. This latest work by the Portuguese theatrical troupe Hotel Europa is scheduled for Saturday, 13 June at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, 14 June at 12:00 p.m. After the first performance, a discussion will be moderated by students of the Escuela de Actores de Canarias (Canary Islands Acting School) as part of a collaboration between the Acting School and Auditorio de Tenerife.
Terra do Fogo, which will be shown in Portuguese with Spanish subtitles, is largely focused on the story of a family that was hit hard by a series of forest fires in Portugal in 2017 that burned 500,000 hectares and took the lives of over 100 people. The production examines the phenomenon of forest fires, analysing their devastating impact in Portugal and southern Europe through a blend of testimonies, data, and critical reflections on land management and the future of forests.
The show’s objective is threefold: to analyse the current state of Portuguese forests, to document the circumstances of people and the forests ravaged by fires in recent years in Portugal and other southern European countries, and to come to an understanding of this reality in comparative terms. In this way, the troupe considers whether or not southern Europe’s forests burn and are managed in the same ways. The show also examines ways to protect and diversify Portuguese forests.
Terra do Fogo is a joint production of Auditorio de Tenerife—where the troupe engaged in an artist residency last year in the venue’s La Salita hall—, Convento São Francisco, Cineteatro Louletano, Teatro-Cine de Pombal and Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias.
Hotel Europa is comprised of André Amálio (Portugal) and Tereza Havlíčková (Czech Republic). Together they have created documentary theatre shows that explore the boundaries between theatre, dance and performance. Productions of Hotel Europa have taken place in Portugal, Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Cabo Verde, Colombia, Italy and Uruguay.
Their works make use of overlapping autobiographical material, family stories, domestic lore, testimonies, interviews and historiographic research. They examine unresolved issues from the recent past, such as colonialism, fascism, and communism, in an attempt to establish links between the past and the present.
The next offering to take place in La Salita hall will be La gran cacería, by Juan Mayorga. Although tickets have already sold out, the public may attend a master class with the playwright titled “El teatro frente al pasado,” scheduled for Saturday, 20 June at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free, subject to capacity.
In addition, La jácara de los cuerpos imposibles, by Alberto Velasco, will be performed in La Salita on 26, 27 and 28 June. The tickets have a single price of €8 and €5 for audiences under 30. They can be purchased on the website www.auditoriodetenerife.com, at the auditorium’s box office, or by dialling the phone number 902 317 327 from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
