This programme contrasts memory, conflict and inner reconstruction.

The overture of Ethel Smyth’s The Wreckers kicks off the evening with overwhelming force. The music cries out against the violence of a society that sacrifices human lives to maintain a lifestyle. In a coastal village of Cornwall, Marc and Thirza rebel against the barbarity of the locals who lure passing sailing ships to their doom to plunder their cargo. In this ground-breaking work, considered ahead of its time, the desire to abolish cruel traditions becomes an act of love and conscience.

Pablo Ferrández, one of the most accomplished cellists of our time, interprets Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, composed during a period of great political and personal turmoil. A work full of bitter irony, emotional upheaval and challenge.

Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, conducted by Pablo González, concludes the programme. The score represents a struggle against the oppressive weight of tradition, resulting in the discovery of a singular language that is robust, luminous and innovative.
