Synopsis

Auditorio de Tenerife presents the play El enterrador, performed by Teatre de Dos, starring Pepe Zapata and directed by Gerard Vázquez, in the venue’s La Salita hall.

Ahead of an upcoming performance, an actor prepares a monologue that he has written himself. It is based on what his family, all born in the same village as his character (“the gravedigger”), have told him over the years about him and his grandfather.

Today, he went to the theatre alone a few hours before the scheduled rehearsal to go over the work. His character dedicates his life to burying those who have been executed by firing squad. One day, he recognises a friend among the cadavers: a fellow villager whom he thought had died in battle. Telling his dead friend of his troubles and his circumstances, he explains that he is risking his life so that families may find and identify the bodies of their loved ones when the time comes.

The rehearsal is interrupted several times by telephone calls from the stage director and the actor’s mother, who, due to her failing memory, will insist on certain details that differ from those the actor has assimilated regarding his grandfather and the executed friend. This will make him doubt which version is the truth.
