Mahmud y no solo Mahmud

The 17th edition of Jornadas de Inclusión en las Artes Escénicas (Conferences on Inclusion in the Performing Arts), organised by the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM), an autonomous agency of the Ministry of Culture, presents with the Auditorio de Tenerife the outdoor show Mahmud y no solo Mahmud  of Puntocero Company.

Madrid-based Puntocero Company has assembled a multifaceted, talented cast under the direction of Zenaida Alcalde for the staging of a version of the book Partir para contar by Mahmud Traoré and Bruno le Dantec that tells the story of Traoré’s odyssey to achieve his current residence in Spain. The cast comprises five artists from the worlds of circus and theatre: actor Thomas King, actress and singer Betiza Bismark, and the acrobats Elvis Kyengo Kakiti, Colins Ouna Opiyo, and Joel Bwana Anabaka. Silvia Albert Sopale is the author of this visual work and is responsible for its direct and profound adaptation of the book. This creation seeks to recover and share the story of Mahmud, y no solo de Mahmud.

Created for the general public, as well as performing-arts professionals and groups associated with social inclusion, education, and human rights, the show offers a performative experience that is very close to every human heart. Through contemporary circus, live singing and physical theatre, the work delves into the subjects of migration, racism, colonialism and border policies.

Spectators will find themselves before a visual and poetic offering that combines diverse performative languages to facilitate their comprehension and emotional connection to the work, without the need for prior knowledge of the subject. Inviting us to practise critical reflection, dialogue and empathy, the work offers a shared space in which we can think about diversity, social justice and the truths of migration from a human and collective perspective.
