Brahms and his protegees
Synopsis
As part of its Chamber Music Series, the Tenerife Auditorium is hosting the concert Brahms and his protegees, performed by the Camerata RCO, made up of members of the famous Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam.
Both Zemlinsky and Dohnanyi came to Brahms for commentary on their compositions. Zemlinsky with his trio opus 3 inspired by the newly composed Clarinet trio by Brahms himself. Brahms wrote a letter to his editor : Simrock. They took the work of the 25 years old Zemlinsky in their catalogue.
Dohnányi’s first published work was a piano quintet written when he was eighteen. At this point, his God (Brahms) appeared on the scene. Johannes Brahms, who was then 62, heard the work, thought it extraordinary and took the young Dohnányi under his wing, getting the work and the composer to Vienna and an assured future in the music world.
Although the sextet is from a long time after that, one can still hear the admiration for Brahms.
The work was published by Simrock the following year, following a recommendation by Brahms, who added “I can recommend the man as well as his talent”
