Pablo Derqui puts himself in the shoes of one of the most heartless dictators of all times in Calígula, a great theatre play by Albert Camus, directed by Mario Gas and premiered in the 63rd Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida.
Calígula is one of the major plays by the French novelist and playwright Albert Camus, an essential author of 20th century France, Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957. Based on the Roman Emperor described by Suetonius, Calígula actually is a series of plays inside one single piece, which portrays a white-collar tyrant who is looking for the meaning of life to the point of anxiety. The leading character, played by Derqui, is faced with the absurd after the death of his sister/lover and makes his people suffer a terrifying series of demonstrations of what he believes to be the absurd truth: men die and are unhappy.
Mario Gas says that “I’m still alive!”, his last sentence, the protagonist’s death rattle, is both a vital statement and a warning that he can still spread terror.
