Synopsis

In the context of its programme of Jazz Concerts, Auditorio de Tenerife has scheduled David Helbock with his trio Random/Control and singer Fola Dada.

Among the most successful European jazz musicians at this time, David Helbock has given hundreds of concerts around the world and is a frequent guest artist at the most important international jazz festivals. He has over 20 albums to his credit as an ensemble leader, the last six of which were released by the prestigious German label ACT.

On this occasion, he will be accompanied by his trio Random/Control, with whom he has experimented and played for over 16 years, and versatile German singer Fola Dada, recipient in 2022 of the renowned German Jazz Prize. David Helbock is to perform in Madrid, more charmingly virtuosic and eccentric than ever, alongside one of Central Europe’s most surprising singers.

The trio’s distinctive style remains characterised by its multitude of instruments: just three musicians who play far more than 20 instruments. Andreas Broger plays clarinet, bass clarinet, several saxophones, and flutes, and now even sings on occasion. Johannes Bär has mastered nearly all the brass instruments, including sousaphone, tuba, trombone, trumpet, and horn, but also didgeridoo, beatbox, and drums, sometimes all at once.

Inspired by this variety of musical possibilities, David Helbock focuses on the piano and some percussion instruments. He has composed many new pieces, scoring music for the poetry of William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Erich Fried, and others. Now the trio has invited Fola Dada to sing these poems.

Fola Dada is an extremely versatile artist who may be considered a pioneer of the blending of different genres and singing. As a singer trained in jazz, she began tap dancing in the style of Fred Astaire and never stopped, not even when providing vocal training to the contestants of a televised talent show broadcast in Germany. She is an indispensable part of the German jazz and soul scene.
