Estrella Morente Carbonell was born in 1980 in the Sacromonte neighbourhood of Granada. As the daughter of singer Enrique Morente and flamenco dancer Aurora Carbonell, she was surrounded by flamenco throughout her childhood and early adult life.

At just seven years of age, she was accompanied by the legendary flamenco guitarist Sabicas, and her international debut took place when she was 16, at the opening ceremony of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Sierra Nevada (Granada). She debuted as a solo artist in 1997 at Peña de la Platería in Granada. Her first solo recording, titled Mi Cante y un Poema, was warmly received by flamenco enthusiasts.

Her numerous accolades include the Ondas Award for the best flamenco creation, a nomination in the Latin Grammy Awards and two in the Amigo Awards. Her first album achieved platinum status and the second went gold.

Estrella Morente is a great admirer of Niña de los Peines, Camarón de la Isla, Pepe Marchena, Manuel Vallejo and, of course, her father. However, she has built a solid career of her own and is among today’s top-ranked flamenco artists. Despite her youth, she has performed around the globe, thrilling audiences with her clear and nuanced voice, combining the essence of her natal Granada with the latest trends of modern flamenco.

She first performed in London in July 2005 at the Barbican Centre, winning over the local press and critics. That same summer, she embarked on a tour with her father Enrique under the auspices of the Córdoba Guitar Festival. Their first professional engagement together, the tour took them to several prestigious venues and events in Spain.

After being nominated for the Latin Grammy Awards and winning the 2006 Music Awards in the category of best flamenco recording, Estrella Morente took part in a campaign that sought to reform the Statute of Autonomy of Andalusia. She also won the coveted Golden Microphone Award bestowed by the Spanish Federation of Radio and Television Associations, which acknowledges the work of professionals in the sector.

She kicked off 2009 with a debut in the Netherlands, where she appeared at the Musiekgebouw concert hall in Amsterdam with her group. She went on to perform in Miami and gave a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall in New York that was widely covered by the media. She then returned to London for a performance at Sadler’s Wells Theatre and continued to Scandinavia to debut in Norway and Sweden.

She appeared as a solo artist in a performance of El Amor Brujo and other works of Andalusian composer Manuel de Falla with the Spanish National Orchestra, which was recorded in November 2010. She continued experimenting with classical music in a series of concerts with the orchestras of Bilbao, Cadaqués, Granada, Murcia and Málaga.

Her album Autorretrato was released by EMI on 2 October 2012. The recording includes the collaboration of Pat Metheny and Michael Nyman, along with several well-known flamenco artists such as Paco de Lucía, Tomatito, Ketama and Vicente Amigo.

A tour of major cities in 2014 took her to Brussels, Amsterdam, Zurich, Vienna, Uppsala, Dortmund, Eindhoven, and American cities such as Miami, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Sonoma, Washington, Savannah and Los Angeles, the Argentinean capital Buenos Aires and Oman. Her last performance that year was in Teatro Real in Madrid, in a production of El Amor Brujo with the Víctor Ullate Ballet whose five-show run was a huge success.

In 2016, she played the part of Lysistrata in La guerra de las mujeres, which premiered at the Mérida International Classical Theatre Festival and garnered great acclaim for its 15 performances. That same year saw the release of her albums 15 años con Estrella, containing her greatest hits, and Encuentro, with pianist Javier Perianes, in which she interpreted works of Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca. She toured both albums at home and abroad.

Her next recording, Copla, was released on 22 February 2019. At this time, she is engaged in a tour of this album in the best theatres in Spain, such as the Liceo in Barcelona and Teatro Real in Madrid.

Estrella Morente’s understanding of her art is deep, her taste is innate and refined, and she has become a household name among flamenco enthusiasts and music lovers in general.

She now divides her efforts between her career and her close collaboration with food banks, Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam Intermón.
