Synopsis

The Auditorio de Tenerife, in collaboration with other partners, presents The Threepenny Opera (La ópera de los tres centavos), directed by Mario Vega. The production will take place in the Symphonic Hall, with the audience seated on stage. This version is based on Die Dreigroschenoper by Bertolt Brecht (libretto) and Kurt Weill (music), co-authored with Elisabeth Hauptmann and inspired by John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera.

The show will be performed in Spanish.

Set in London between the two world wars, the city is depicted resembling an abattoir, as a place where hardship and wealth coexist, and morality is on sale to the highest bidder. Mack the Knife, an elegant and ruthless criminal, reigns over this dark world and leads an empire founded on vice and corruption. Opposing him is Jonathan Peachum, who manages the city’s beggars and exploits their misfortune with the calculated efficiency of an accountant drawing up financial statements.

The Threepenny Opera uses striking staging, a cynical cast, and unsentimental music to deliver sharp humour that critiques a system where justice is often treated as insignificant as another musical number of the show.

In this threepenny world, the central question is not who is a criminal, but who can afford honesty in the face of poverty.

As the show begins, the threat of consequence looms.
