As part of its Chamber-Music Cycle, the Auditorio de Tenerife has scheduled two concerts of El Afecto Ilustrado performing the complete string quintets with two violas of José Palomino de la Quintana (1753-1810). The two separate programmes, titled Cuartetos del Conde I and Cuartetos del Conde II, are to take place on Tuesday, 16 December, and Thursday, 18 December, respectively.

The oeuvre of José Palomino, whose outstanding compositional skills are reflected in these quintets, deserves special mention within the musical output of the Age of Enlightenment on the Iberian Peninsula, due to its beautiful lyricism, effective harmony, and a style that frequently heralded the aesthetics of emerging trends. The influence of Luigi Boccherini is clearly evident in this collection of string quintets with two violas, composed in 1780 and dedicated to the 6th Count of Fernán Núñez, Spain’s ambassador to Portugal from 1780 to 1788. The brilliance of its major harmonies, the melancholy and depth of its minor harmonies and, in particular, the exquisite solo passages of the cello remind us of the stylistic stamp of the composer from Lucca.

The melodic lines of the cello stand out for their virtuosic nature, requiring absolute command of the upper register, and are nearly as technically demanding as the part of the first violin. Nonetheless, Palomino’s stamp is highly personal, even though it is primarily based on and furthers the style of Boccherini. José Palomino was among the most outstanding composers of the musical context of Lisbon in the second half of the 18th century. Paradoxically, he is also one of the most overlooked figures in the history of Spanish music from that period. Like many other Iberian composers and instrumentalists from the second half of the 18th century, Palomino remains relatively unknown today outside of erudite circles: not only as a composer but as a violin virtuoso and occasional violist, conductor and forerunner of the model of musician dually serving royalty and undertaking works commissioned by the aristocracy, the Church and theatrical productions.

In 2020, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of the Canary Islands and the Canarian Museum of Las Palmas jointly released a printed collection of all of José Palomino’s string quintets with two violas. The collection significantly addressed the need to recover, study, and update the relevance of Spanish heritage repertoires that have remained in obscurity, to serve as a guide to accessible execution based on suitable aspects of interpretation. After premiering the last three quintets of the collection in July 2021, the ensemble El Afecto Ilustrado recorded for the specialised label Lindoro all six of the quintets in the Auditorio El Sauzal theatre, on the island of Tenerife. This recording is intended to serve as a source of consultation not only for interpreters seeking to explore the repertoire of Spanish music from the latter part of the 18th century, but also for musicologists and other relevant professionals, as well as music lovers and enthusiasts of the general time period. The recovery of this repertoire has had a highly favourable impact on music in general in Spain, not only due to the freshness contributed by the restoration of this type of heritage but also as a result of the quality of the music itself.
