Riots sparked by the news of the extradition of three ETA members in 1994 take to the stage this weekend
This weekend, the Auditorio de Tenerife stages three performances of Filtro, by the company La Dramática Errante. The theatrical work, about the social unrest taking place in Uruguay in 1994 upon news of the extradition of three members of the terrorist organisation ETA, will be performed in the La Salita venue. The shows are scheduled for this Friday (15 May), and Saturday (16 May) at 7.30 p.m., while Sunday’s performance (May 17) will be at 12 noon. The Friday session ends with a public talk moderated by students of the Canary Islands Actors School, in collaboration with the Auditorio de Tenerife.
María Goiricelaya directs and wrote this work this work based on the rioting that took place near the Hospital Filtro medical centre, which is considered the most severe episode of street violence and repression since the return of democracy to Uruguay in 1985. The cast includes actors Marcos Valls, Luis Pazos, Agustín Urrutia and Camila Parard in an international co-production by La Dramática Errante and Sala Verdi with the collaboration of Donostia Kultura.
The work portrays the events of 24 August 1994 in Montevideo following the attempt to extradite three Spaniards hailing from the country’s Basque Country region who had been accused of being members of the terrorist organisation ETA. A massive protest ensued, which was met with brutal police repression, known as Sucesos del Hospital Filtro.
Filtro is a docufiction piece that draws on sources such as the transcript of the Uruguayan House of Representatives, excerpts from the trial, several books, documentary audiovisual material, newspaper and magazine coverage, interviews, etc. The work is meant not only to remind the public of one of the most important events in the recent history of Uruguay but to reflect on issues such as political asylum, justice and international solidarity.
La Dramática Errante is the name chosen by Ane Pikaza and María Goiricelaya for their artistic project. It is a contemporary initiative focused on feminism and social commitment, nationally recognised for its contributions to the creation of modern theatrical works from the Basque Country. The project is noted for innovative works that embrace a critical commitment to societal concerns.
Filtro paves the way towards the internationalisation of both creative undertakings. The project also emerges as a clear example of international co-creation that upholds and enriches the main objectives of this theatre company, addressing transcendental subjects that promote theatre as an art form capable of fostering reflection and improving society.
La Dramática Errante also seeks to write its own scripts to contribute to the generation of new theatrical works in Basque theatre, as well as conducting research in the creation of its works and seeking new poetic forms that explore theatrical art as a vehicle of expression.
La Salita’s next offering will be Dysphoria, by Histrión Teatro, directed by María Goiricelaya, with performances on 22, 23 and 24 May. The tickets can be purchased at a single price of €8 and €5 for audiences under 30 on the website www.auditoriodetenerife.com, at the auditorium’s box office, or by dialling the phone number 902 317 327 from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
