Conrado Moya

The marimba soloist Conrado Moya is currently one of the most representative figures of his instrument internationally, acclaimed for his extraordinary technical and expressive capacities, and his devotion on stage.

Conrado Moya works intensely as a marimba soloist around the world, playing in performances and alongside orchestras, choirs and symphonic groups, including ADDA Simfònica, Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa, Orquesta de Córdoba, Orquesta de Extremadura, Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, Göttinger Symphonieorchester, Orquesta Ciudad de Almería, Bilbao Sinfonietta, Coral de Bilbao and the wind bands of Barcelona, Bilbao and Madrid. He has played under the direction of Guillermo García Calvo, Jan Cober, Michael Thomas, José Rafael Pascual Vilaplana, Unai Urrecho, Salvador Vázquez and Josep Vicent, among others.

He also participates in important events such as the PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) in Indianapolis, the International Festival of Marimba Players of Guatemala, the International Festival of Marimba Players of Chiapas, International Marimba Festival of Nagakute, the International Mercedes-Benz Music Festival of Shanghai, the Spanish Music Festival of Cadiz and the charity movement Fair Saturday. Within the field of chamber music, he has been a member of duos, ensembles and groups such as Li Biao Percussion Group or Marimba Quartett.

All of this activity has led him to play in the main concert halls in Europe, Asia and America, such as the Liederhalle of Stuttgart, L’Auditori of Barcelona, the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires, the Teatro Julio Mario Santo Domingo of Bogota, the Sala São Paulo, the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre or the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

His recent and upcoming symphonic projects include two concerts in the season of the Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sebastian Perlowski the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia and Manuel Hernández Silva; and the global première of the Concerto for marimba and orchestra by Tomás Marco alongside the Orchestra of the Community of Madrid and José Ramón Encinar, organised by the National Centre for the Promotion of Music (CNDM-INAEM). The latter joins the recent global première of three new concerts marimba, which were also written for him, ‘Visit Spain!’, by José Luis Greco; Tres paisatges pictòrics, by Albert Guinovart; and El jardín de Baco, by Lorenzo Palomo; as well as the Concierto Heroico by Joaquín Rodrigo in the version for marimba, transcribed by Conrado Moya himself with the exclusive authorisation granted to the artist by the heirs of the composer.

His chamber music activity notably includes his tours around Germany, Spain and Japan, and, this season, once again in the United States, with one of the most demanding projects for a duo of marimbas, the Goldberg Variations of J. S. Bach, alongside Katarzyna Myćka; as well as different performances as a soloist and master classes in Spain, Germany, Poland, Japan and Colombia.

Educated at the conservatoire of his hometown, Alicante, he simultaneously received guidance from the soloists Sisco Aparici (Valencia) and Katarzyna Myćka (Stuttgart). By the time he had finished his studies at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin, under the supervision of the percussion soloist Li Biao, Conrado Moya had already been recognised with awards such as First Place in the International Marimba Competition of the University of Cordoba, the Honorary Award of the Performance Competition of the Society of Concerts of Alicante and the Musical Performance Scholarship of the Amadeo Association for Music L. Sala, standing out for his quality as a musician, as well as his work and commitment to the future of his instrument.

Conrado Moya maintains a firm commitment to the development and promotion of his instrument. He has worked intensely on the creation of a new repertoire for marimba alongside composers from all over the world, with a special focus on those from his country, such as Ferran Cruixent, José Luis Greco, Albert Guinovart, Christos Hatzis, Anna Ignatowicz-Glińska, Arkadiusz Kątny, Tomás Marco and Lorenzo Palomo, as well as on the transcription and recovery of great works from musical heritage, rediscovering compositions by everyone from J. S. Bach to Joaquín Rodrigo through the sound of the marimba. All of this work led to Silentium, his first album as a solo marimba player, and Marimba Synergy, his latest album project with the Goldberg Variations by Bach as a duo with Katarzyna Myćka for the label Mons Records.

Likewise, he has carried out extensive pedagogical work, and he is regularly invited to participate as a teacher in academies and master classes in Spain, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Colombia, Mexico, Canada, the USA and Japan, among others, and also as a jury member in international competitions. He is currently a tenured professor of marimba at the High-Performance Higher School of Music of Valencia (ESMAR).
Conrado Moya is an artist who represents the American brand of marimbas, Marimba One, with which he has also produced his own line of mallets.
