JOSÉ MARÍA DE VICENTE

Musical Direction

He holds a degree in Orchestra Conducting from the Vienna Conservatory, having studied under Maestro Reinhard Schwarz (1994-98). He has taken an active part in numerous master classes, highlighting those of Bernard Haitink, Vladimir Fedosejevyel, and the Orchestra Conducting Programme of the prestigious Tanglewood Music Centre in Boston.

He has conducted orchestras such as the Vienna Mozart Orchestra, City of Elche Orchestra, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Mozart Ensemble, Classical Camerata of the Canary Islands, and the Symphonic Orchestra of Tenerife; as well as, of course, the Orchestra of the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Canary Islands, where he teaches.

He has been present at some of the most significant events of musical life in the Canary Islands, such as the Canary Islands Music Festival, Tenerife Opera Festival, Lanzarote Visual Music Festival, Theatre, and Dance Festival, and the Concert Season of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, receiving applause from audiences, and specialised critics.

 

ANA HERNÁNDEZ SANCHIZ

Narrator

She studied music at the Pablo Sarasate Conservatory in Pamplona, her hometown. She combines her work as an actress with musical dissemination and cultural management, collaborating with the main Spanish symphony orchestras, as well as other prestigious institutions such as the Royal Theatre, the National Dance Company, the Antonio Gades Company, the Canal Theatres, Maestranza Theatre, Juan March Foundation, and the Baluarte of Pamplona. She is a regular collaborator in the Tenerife Symphony's socio-educational area.

Among her international participation, noteworthy is her work with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, the National Bicentennial Youth Orchestra of Peru, the National Orchestra of Argentina, the Montevideo Symphonic Band, the Bank of the Republic of Colombia, and the Grand National Theatre of Lima. She has recorded several albums as a musical narrator and is the author of concert scripts. As a trainer, she conducts creative workshops on projects of socio-educational nature with different collectives and groups.

She is a co-founder and member of the Arquetípicas Stage Creators' Company, starring in the play "Las Boulangers," released in 2020. In October 2021 she debuted "Mozart Revolution", the Royal Junior Season's opening show at the Royal Theatre, and she presented the ballet "Pulcinella" (a collaborative effort with the National Orchestra and Choir of Spain and the National Dance Company, with choreography by Blanca Li) at the National Music Auditorium in Madrid. Her latest premiere was "Memory", with music by Edward Elgar, part of the Tenerife Symphony's programming.

 

GUSTAVO DÍAZ-JEREZ

Piano

Gustavo Díaz-Jerez is one of the greatest exponents of musical interpretation and creation in Spain. As a pianist, he has performed in most Spanish auditoriums and many of the main world venues (Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall of New York, Musikverein of Vienna, Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, Royal Festival Hall of London, etc.). He has also been a soloist with most of the main Spanish orchestras and foreign ensembles (Budapest Festival Orchestra, Turin Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Symphoniker, etc.).

A noteworthy performer of Spanish music, in 2010 he was awarded the Albeniz Medal, an award that Alicia de Larrocha also received, for his recording and dissemination of Iberia. His extensive discography also includes the recording of all the pieces for piano by Manuel de Falla (SEDEM), as well as music for piano by Teobaldo Power (RALS). He also recorded Iberia by Albéniz for the first time in high-definition video, doing so with the Orpheus label. In 2018, he released a monographic CD with his own piano pieces, Metaludios for piano, with the help of the IBS Classical label. A second CD, also dedicated to his Metaludios (Metaludes) was released under the IBS label in 2021.

As a composer, his work has been debuted by prestigious performers and groups both inside and outside of Spain. In 2011, his orchestral piece Ymarxa, a piece commissioned by the XXVII Canary Islands Music Festival, was debuted by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Charles Dutoit. In 2020, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra recorded Maghek, a cycle of seven orchestral pieces inspired by the Canary Islands for the Signum Classics label.

 

SVIATOSLAV BELONOGOV

Viola and viola d'amore

Born in Russia, he has been a viola soloist for the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra since 1997. He is a graduate of the Higher Russian Music Academy, having studied under Vyacheslav Trushin, where he obtained a Master of Fine Arts (1992). He won the USSR National Viola Competition in Lviv (1988), and in Saint Petersburg, he was awarded with the D. Shostakovich International Competition for String Quartets (1993).

He was a member of the Russian National Orchestra and a soloist for the Maliy State Symphony Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. His interpretations of various concerts by A. Vivaldi and Ch. Graupner for viola d'amore, the Concertante by W.A. Mozart, "Harold en Italie" by H. Berlioz, Sonata da Chiesa by F. Martin, etc. have all been quite acclaimed. He has recorded for labels like Olympia, Art Classics, RALS Insulamusic Ediciones, and Melomics Records.

In 2017, he did a CD recording of contemporary pieces by Canarian and Russian composers for viola d'amore and piano or theremin with Gustavo Díaz-Jerez and Lydia Kavina. In 2018, he played the viola d'amore in the production of "Katya Kabanova" by Leoš Janáček at the Liceu Opera of Barcelona.

 

IRINA PEÑA SÁNCHEZ

Violin

She began her violin studies at the Conservatory of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where she obtained her Professional Degree. She later studied at the Reina Sofía Higher School of Music in Madrid under Professor Zakhar Bron, and she continued her studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where she culminated her training with Alexander Kerr, former concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

She has received master classes from Jean Jacques Kantorow, Silvia Marcovici, Rainer Schmidt, Gerard Caussé, Walter Levin, etc., and has been a member of the Youth Orchestra of the European Union, touring under the baton of conductors such as Sir Colin Davis and Herbert Blomstedt.

Her special interest in chamber music has led her to perform in two editions of the Canary Islands International Music Festival. She has collaborated with Quantum Ensemble and ATADEM. In 2011, she participated in a tour sponsored by the Cervantes Institute with a string quartet - a tour in which she brought the music of Canarian composers to cities such as New York, Beijing, and Tokyo, among others.

She has been invited to play at the Cadaqués Orchestra, the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, and the National Orchestra of Catalonia.

 

DAVID BARRERA

Cello

David Barrera, born in Tenerife, studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, where he studied the cello with Professor Kerstin Feltz and chamber music with Professors Stephan Goerner and Chia Chou, receiving an Academic Award from the Austrian Ministry of Education.

He has won the Gradus ad Parnassum National Prize of Austria and has also won the Jugend Musiziert Competition of Germany. As a soloist, he has performed in cities such as Madrid, Paris, Beijing, Shanghai, and Seoul, making recordings for the ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) and the Piccolo label. In addition, he has performed at important venues such as the Sydney Opera House, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Bunkamura in Tokyo, and the Oriental Art Centre in Shanghai.

As a chamber musician, he has participated in numerous festivals such as the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festspiele in Germany, the Latin Music Festival of Chicago (USA), the Ushuaia International Music Festival in Argentina, the Cervantes Institute in Sidney, Australia, and the Canary Islands Music Festival. He is regularly invited to do concerts in Japan, where he has performed at the Kioi Hall in Tokyo, at the Embassy of Spain, and at the Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre, among others.

He has served as an assistant professor of cello at the Graz University of Music and Performing Arts, and he currently teaches master classes in Spain and Japan.

David Barrera has been a member of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra since 2012.

 

IKER SÁNCHEZ TRUEBA

Double bass

Born in Oviedo in 1996, he began his double bass studies with Oscar Allen and Andrea Baruffaldi. He finished his Higher Degree under the tutelage of Manuel Ballesteros at the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Principality of Asturias, doing so with the highest GPA and winning the "Ángel Muñiz Toca" end-of-degree award in 2017. At the same time, he studied under Professor Alexander Michno, who has had a significant impact on his instrumental interpretation.

In 2010, he won the first prize in the second category of the Franz Simandl International Competition in Blatná (Czech Republic). Iker was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (JONDE) from 2014 to 2017 and of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (GMJO) from 2016 to 2020, orchestras in which he acted as a double bass soloist.

He has also collaborated with orchestras such as the Oviedo Philharmonic (OFIL), Madrid Community Orchestra (ORCAM), and Madrid Symphony Orchestra (OSM). In November 2017, he was awarded the position of a soloist in the double bass section of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, where he continues to play today.

 

CATHERINE MOONEY

Flute

British flutist Catherine Mooney studied at the Purcell School and the Royal College of Music of London, both world-renowned institutes. Upon finishing her studies, she began her career as an orchestra musician, obtaining the position of assistant flute soloist in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. She later moved to Germany, working as a freelancer, only to subsequently join the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, where she is currently a flute soloist.

During her career as a flutist, she has frequently participated with numerous European orchestras, such as the City of Birmingham Orchestra, the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria, the Symphony Orchestra of Galicia, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia. Catherine also participates with the Lyrique-en-Mer Ensemble of France during the opera festival and concerts dedicated to chamber music.

She is also active as a teacher. During her years in Hong Kong, she was a flute teacher at the English School Foundation, as well as at her private flute-teaching studio. She continues working as a teacher in Tenerife where, among other positions, she has been a teacher at the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra's Orchestral Academy. She has given master classes for the Birmingham City Orchestra's Youth Orchestra and the Malta Youth Orchestra. She regularly collaborates with actors and dancers as an active participant in production and choreography.

 

CARLOS DEL SER GUILLÉN

Oboe

Born in Valladolid, he began his oboe studies at the conservatory of his hometown and, after graduating from the Higher Conservatory of Music of Salamanca, he continued his training with Roland Perrenoud and Maurice Bourgue at the Haute Ecole de Musique of Geneva, where he obtained his Diplôme de Musicien d'Orchestre and the prestigious Diplôme de Soliste "avec distinction”. He later honed his skills at the Hochschule für Musik of Freiburg im Breisgau with Professor Lucas Macias Navarro, acting as his class assistant from 2015 to 2018.

<Besides being a member< of the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, he has collaborated as an oboe soloist with the Cadaqués Orchestra, Ensemble Les Dissonances, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Münchner Kammerorchester, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Suisse Romande, Geneva Camerata, Castile and León Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre of Lausanne, MusicAeterna Perm, Residentie Orkest in The Hague, Opera of Zürich, Regio Torino Theatre Orchestra, etc.

From 2010 to 2014, he was the second oboe for the Orchestra Mozart of Bologna, directed by Claudio Abbado. He has also collaborated with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

He is currently an oboe soloist for the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra.
