Antony Hermus

Conductor

Antony Hermus is chief conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra and principal guest conductor of Opera North. His hard work, clear-sighted approach and infectiously positive focus encourage musicians and singers to give their very best.

His concerts during the last season include the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia and the orchestras in Stavanger and Trondheim. The 2024-25 season will see his return to the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in its prestigious Matinee series at the Concertgebouw, and the Residentie Orkest, the Bonn Beethovenorchester, the Auckland Philharmonia, the BBC Scottish Symphony, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the North Netherlands Philharmonic. Hermus will debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and the Polish National Radio.

Hermus has conducted opera in Stuttgart, Strasbourg, Gothenburg, Komische Oper Berlin, and Nederlandse Reisopera. He was music director in Dessau between 2009 and 2015, where he conducted his first Ring cycle. In 2025, he will conduct Martinu's "Giulietta" in Nice and "Simon Boccanegra" at Opera North.

He was principal guest conductor of the North Netherlands Orchestra between 2018 and 2024. Recent high points of his career include a Mahler cycle and a homage to Charles Ives with local brass bands. He now holds the position of honorary conductor. He is also a visiting professor at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and an artistic advisor of the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands. He has recorded several works of rediscovered Romantic composers with the Bamberg Symphony.
