VIHUELA

Dazzled by a fantasia by Luys de Narváez, he decided -still a teenager- to devote himself exclusively to 16th century lute and vihuela, a decision he has kept up to the present with no regret whatsoever.

In 1996 he moved to Switzerland to study with his teacher and mentor, Hopkinson Smith, at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. He later went to maestro Eugène Ferré in France, who gave him a very special perspective of the instrument and its music.

In 1998 he founded the duo "El Cortesano" with José Hernández-Pastor, which focused on the Spanish vihuela repertoire. In 2001 they recorded their first album which was devoted to vihuela player Estevan Daça. In 2008, a second record focused on Salamanca vihuela player Diego Pisador.

In 2008 he embarked on a new project with British tenor John Potter, revisiting English "lute songs" literature.

In 2011 he founded – with Anna Maria Friman and Jacob Heringman- "Alternative History", and recorded their first record with the ECM label, Secret History, released in 2017. In 2015 ECM released the quartet’s second record Amores Pasados, featuring musicians like Tony Banks (Genesis), Sting or John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) who contributed with new works and/or composed specifically for this project.

Founded in 2013, with soprano María Cristina Kiehr, the duo "Armonía Concertada", is devoted to Italian and Iberian literature for 16th century voice and plucked string instruments. In 2019 Arcana released their first record, Imaginario: de un libro de música de vihuela, first reconstruction of a notebook to sing accompanied by a vihuela.

With fellow Renaissance specialist, Jacob Heringman, he shared a project about lute and vihuela intabulations. They recorded Cifras Imaginarias together in 2014, which was released by the Arcana label in 2017.

He is currently involved in duo projects with French soprano Perrine Devillers, Italian tenor Giovanni Cantarini and French tenor Vivien Simon.
