The German public broadcaster MDR has described Ensemble Diderot as ‘the ensemble for Baroque chamber music’ and the magazine Gramophone praised it for its ‘warm tonal brilliance and razor-sharp definition’. In recent years, the ensemble has taken its place among the most important European chamber-music groups that play exclusively with period instruments. French music magazine Classica describes the group as ‘splendidly prepared to follow in the footsteps of the legendary ‘Musica Antiqua Köln’.
At the heart of the group are four musicians, along with violinist and founder Johannes Pramsohler, who are dedicated to the exploration and performance of the Baroque chamber music repertoire. With its base in Paris, the ensemble's name is a reference to French philosopher Denis Diderot. It is chiefly focused on the inexhaustible heritage of trio sonatas, quartets and larger ensemble sonatas of the 17th and 18th centuries. The group's busy performance schedule and meticulous rehearsal regime have resulted in a level of cohesiveness that may be likened to that of a permanent string quartet.
The ensemble has been an acclaimed guest on stages and festivals in France and abroad, and it was invited as an ensemble-in-residence to Royaumont (France) and Aldeburgh (Great Britain). Its acclaimed debuts took place in 2018 at the Cologne Philharmonie and Vienna's Konzerthaus.
