Considered one of the leading exponents of the romantic bel canto repertoire of recent years, with which he has premiered over 60 titles in this style, José Bros has also achieved significant success with French repertoire works.
Born in Barcelona, he undertook musical studies at the Higher Municipal Conservatoire of Music in his city and sang under the guidance of Jaume Francisco Puig. In 1992 he made his debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu with Anna Bolena, achieving great public and critical acclaim which opened the doors for him to the world’s most prestigious theatres: Scala in Milan, Covent Garden in London, Staatsoper in Vienna, Real in Madrid, Colón in Buenos Aires, as well as theatres in Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Zurich, Rome, Florence, Naples, Turin, Palermo, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Toulouse, Seville, Bilbao, Oviedo, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Toronto, Mexico, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai, among others.
He has also participated in several zarzuela shows, notably Doña Francisquita at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, Los Gavilanes in Palma de Mallorca, La tabernera del puerto at the Teatro de la Zarzuela, Oviedo and Seville. Luisa Fernanda at the Teatro Real, the Scala of Milán, Palau de les Arts, Festival of Peralada and Oviedo, and also in La bruja, at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, Campoamor in Oviedo, Maestranza in Seville and La Tempestad at the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
In 2003 he was named an academic by the Royal Academy of San Romualdo of Science, Literature and the Arts of San Fernando (Cádiz) and, among other awards, he obtained the awards “Orazio Tosi”, “Lauri Volpi”, “Premio Corelli”, Federico Romero Prize awarded by SGAE, the “Lira d’Argento”, Premio Opera Actual 2012, the award for the best male singer in the 2015 opera season of Palma de Mallorca, and the “Preferred artist” distinction of the Opera of Oviedo. He also won the Teatro Campoamor Lyrical Award, in its first edition, for the best opera singer and the Medal of Honour at the Festival of Peralada.
His CD recordings include complete versions of the operas Anna Bolena, Lucia di Lammermoor, La Sonnambula, Roberto Devereux, Ildegonda, La conquista di Granata, Parisina, Maria di Rohan, Il Pirata, Lucrezia Borgia, La Straniera, as well as the zarzuelasla Bruja, Cádiz and Luisa Fernanda, the Miserere by Hilarión Eslava, Por amor with zarzuela romances and Giuramento with bel canto works, while on DVD he has recorded L’amico Fritz, Il viaggio a Reims, I Puritani, La Sonnambula, La Traviata, Don Giovanni, Luisa Fernanda, Maria Stuarda and Don Carlo.
