Juan Mayorga

PLAYWRIGHT AND ACTOR

Juan Mayorga holds a degree in philosophy and mathematics and a doctorate in philosophy, he teaches playwriting and philosophy at the Royal Higher College of Performing Arts of Madrid, and he directs the workshop ‘Memory and Thought in Contemporary Theatre’ at the Institute of Philosophy of the Spanish National Research Council, among other teaching endeavours. He has been the art director of La Abadía Theatre since February 2022, and he is a full member of the Spanish Royal Academy. His theatrical works include El traductor de Blumemberg, Himmelweg, Animales nocturnos, El chico de la última fila, La tortuga de Darwin, and El cartógrafo. He has also adapted such classics as Hecuba (Euripides), Fuente Ovejuna (Lope de Vega), and Woyzeck (Georg Büchner). With Juan Cavestany, he is also the co-author of Alejandro y Ana, lo que  España no pudo ver de la boda de la hija del presidente y de Penumbra. As a director, he has directed productions of La lengua en pedazos (2012 and 2021), Reykjavík (2015), El cartógrafo (2016), Intensamente azules (2018), El mago (2018), and Silencio (2022). Among other accolades, he holds the Premio Europa Nuevas Realidades Teatrales award (2016), the Spanish National Theatre Award (2007), and the Spanish National Dramatic Literature Award (2013). In 2022, he received the Premio Princesa de Asturias literary award.
