Kukai Dantza was created in 2001 through the initiative of the dancer and choreographer Jon Maya. Kukai carries out its work through traditional Basque dance; proposing encounters with other dance styles and ways of understanding art. Thus, Kukai creates contemporary shows through traditional Basque dance, producing unique creations and collaborations with prestigious choreographers. This has earned it an unmistakable identity on the international scene, and it is making an increasing number of appearances at festivals and on programmes all over the world. Among its projects, the shows created alongside Tanttaka Teatroa and the collaborations with different choreographers are very renowned: Cesc Gelabert, Israel Galvan, Jone San Martín (The Forsythe Ballet), La Intrusa Danza… Its many awards notably include the MAX Award for Best New Show in 2009 and the two 2015 MAX Awards received for 'Gelajauziak’: Best Musical Composition (Sabin Bikendi) and Best Cast.
