Marcos Morau

Choreographer

Trained between Barcelona and New York, in photography, movement, and theatre, Marcos Morau builds imaginary worlds and landscapes where movement and image encounter and engulf one another.

He obtained the top mark in his end-of-degree project and the extraordinary award for creation at the Theatre Institute of Barcelona. His artistic knowledge is not limited to dance, it extends to other disciplines such as photography and playwriting, he undertook a Master in Theory of Play-Writing between the UAB, the University Pompeu Fabra, and the Theatre Institute of Barcelona.

For over ten years, Marcos has led La Veronal as director, choreographer, and stage, costume, and lighting designer. He has travelled the world presenting his projects at festivals, theatres, and several international settings, such as the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, la Biennale di Venezia, the Festival d’Avignon, the Tanz Im August in Berlin, the Festival RomaEuropa, the SIDance Festival in Seoul and the Sadler s Wells in London, among others.

In addition to his work with La Veronal, Marcos Morau is a guest performer with several companies and theatres all over the world where he produces new creations, always straddled between performing arts and dance: The Göteborg Opera Ballet, the Rhine Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Scapino Ballet, the Carte Blanche, the Ballet de Lorraine, the National Dance Company, the Lucerne Opera Ballet and many others.

He is the youngest winner of the Spanish National Dance Award; the language of Marcos Morau is a legacy of the abstract movement and physical theatre. Powerful body language is based on the annihilation of any organic logic, dissecting movement and transforming it into a unique identity.

Also, Marcos Morau was awarded the FAD Sebastià Gasch prize, awarded by the FAD Arts and Design Foundation, and the TimeOut Award for the best creator, among others. With his creations, he has attained prizes at several national and international choreographic competitions, such as the Hannover International Choreography Competition, the Choreography Competition of Copenhagen, Madrid or Maspalomas.

In addition to his creative side, Marcos Morau combines his creations with teaching, giving classes and workshops based on creative processes and new drama in conservatoires, series, and universities, such as the Institut del Teatre, the University of the Arts in Strasbourg, and the Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris, among others.

The future of Morau is open to new formats and languages where Opera, dance and physical theatre dialogue closer than ever, seeking new forms of expression and communication in our present age, which is always turbulent and changing.
