Seven new stage works are being premiered, joining some thirty productions in which the island institution is currently involved.
For the 2025-2026 performing arts season, the Auditorio de Tenerife unveils its first two of seven co-productions, which join a total of 30 new proposals, including six operas, four musical commissions, and 13 research processes. The details were announced by the Councillor for Cultural Affairs of the Tenerife Island Council, José Carlos Acha; José Luis Rivero, the Artistic Director of the Auditorio de Tenerife; the co-director and choreographer of the dance piece Peces borrosos (Blurry Fish), Carmen Fumero; and Severiano García, the director of the theatrical production Libros cruzados (Book swapping).
The councillor announced that ‘Peces borrosos premieres at 7.30 p.m. on September 6 and 7 in the Symphony Hall, and though Libros cruzados has its opening nights on September 5 and 6 in Tacoronte, it will run eight performances at La Salita hall during October’. José Carlos Acha mentioned that tickets for both are now on sale, and lauded ‘the Auditorio de Tenerife team for making programming of this scale possible, both sequentially and simultaneously’.
José Luis Rivero remarked that ‘coproduction means activating ideas and creativity, alongside nurturing artistic talent, employability, technical assets, and personnel-not just funding’. The Auditorio’s artistic director recalled that ‘this place was founded with that spirit: talent united to create for a global audience’. He also underscored the networked teamwork with both national and international cultural bodies that support these coproductions. ‘We are proud of these 22 years of achievement,’ he affirmed.
Opening the season at the Auditorio de Tenerife, Peces borrosos is an in-house production created by the association ‘Ritmos del Mundo’ in collaboration of the Chang Dance Studio, Canal Choreography Centre, the National Dance Company and Eduardo Úrculo Cultural Centre. The project is headed by Tenerife’s dancer and choreographer Carmen Fumero alongside Taiwan’s Chang Dance Theatre.
Carmen Fumero expressed that ‘it is a joy that the Auditorio de Tenerife, a national benchmark, has established the base for this project, which, for me, is a huge celebration taking place on the company’s tenth anniversary’. She describes the piece as ‘a communion between two islands, Taiwan and Tenerife, forging a personal and cultural connection that inspires deeply’. Fumero highlighted some of the concepts of the production: ‘It addresses meeting, limits and borders, and the ocean that divides and connects us’.
The performers of this production are the Canary Islands’ dancer and National Dance Award recipient Dácil González, the Chang brothers Chien-Hao, Chien-Chih, and Ho-Chien, Carmen Fumero, and Miguel Zomas, who also co-directs the artistic vision. The music was composed by Iván Cebrián; lighting design is credited to Alfredo Díez and costumes to Yaiza Pinillos.
When looking at fish in a pond, something appears to be blurry, but, at the unseen bottom, a pleasing and naturally occurring order is maintained. Peces borrosos (Blurry Fish) serves as a metaphor that emphasizes what remains unspoken. Like the fish in a pond, our experience in the world is blurry on the surface but deep and orderly at the bottom.
Written by Canary Islands playwright Antonio Tabares, Libros cruzados (Book swapping) is produced by Delirium Teatro and directed by Severiano García. This premiere is framed within the 40 Delirios programme, celebrating 40 years of the company’s theatrical work.
According to Severiano García, ’40 Delirios, encompassing the play, book, exhibition, and documentary, is possible thanks to the financial support as well as the ongoing backing of the Auditorio de Tenerife’. On the work itself, he recognizes it as ‘an ambitious venture with a creative crew of 20 members, including 12 performers, an unusually large group for productions in the Canary Islands’. He shares that those emotions are ‘running high’ and quotes actor Pedro Mari Sánchez who, after watching a closed rehearsal, described it as ‘a miracle’.
At the heart of the play is a book that keeps changing ownership: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. As the story unfolds, three women reassess their lives after reading it. Mariana, a museum attendant, acknowledges living a bland and senseless life. Patricia, a novelist, faces doubts about her role as a writer and the sincerity of her partnership. Silvia, on the other hand, draws comfort from Tolstoy’s writing to cope with her suffering. Born from a deep affection for literature, Libros cruzados reveals the extent to which books can offer fresh perspectives on our lives and aid us in coping with existence.
The cast features Soraya González del Rosario, Joche Rubio, Maday Méndez, Silvia Criado, Abel Moral, Carmen Cabeza, Vicente Ayala, Joel Morales, Dani Sanginés, Mabel Quintero, Delia Hernández, and Ignacio de la Lastra. Severiano García oversees the direction, and Julio Tejera serves as musical director and composer.
The tickets for both events are currently available on the website www.auditoriodetenerife.com, with box office sales beginning September 1.
