The Auditorio de Tenerife’s Symphonic Hall hosts once again its traditional gospel event. This Saturday, 20 December, The South Carolina Gospel Choir will perform Michael Jackson’s Happy Days at 9 p.m., conducted by Reverend Michael Brown. Tickets are sold out. The program features spiritually inspired works by Michael Jackson, including Keep the Faith, along with other popular soul and gospel standards.
The South Carolina Gospel Choir is the expanded successor to the FOCUS Gospel Singers. The group has recorded with renowned artists including God’s Property, Trin-i-tee 5:7, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Karen Clark Sheard, Byron Cage, Natalie Wilson, New Direction, Alvin Slaughter, Hezekiah Walker, Sha’ Simpson, Tye Tribbett & G.A., and Anthony Hamilton.
Wayne Ravenell founded and served as musical director of this dynamic Charleston-based gospel ensemble from South Carolina. Established in 1997, the choir draws its members from local churches to showcase Charleston’s gospel talent. The ensemble features 9 to 15 voices, depending on the event, and performs with keyboards, bass, guitar, and drums.
The South Carolina Gospel Choir exemplifies both a vibrant traditional soul and contemporary gospel. Under Wayne Ravenell’s leadership, the group gave unforgettable performances while guiding audiences through the history of African-American music, from slave songs to modern congregational sounds. Their performances also honoured spirituals, featured hits by James Brown and Whitney Houston, and paid loving tribute to Thomas A. Dorsey, the creator of gospel.
In 2005, Michael Brown succeeded Wayne Ravenell as director of The South Carolina Gospel Choir. He also serves as national minister of music for Live Ministries Fellowship Inc., founded by Bishop Brian D. Moore.
Reverend Brown has continued his predecessor’s legacy, showcasing South Carolina in his presentations and broadening the choir’s musical repertoire while maintaining the energy of traditional gospel. The South Carolina Gospel Choir unites Charleston’s top gospel artists to share the city’s music at conventions, concerts, and festivals worldwide. The choir has performed at leading venues in the United States and is also recognized in Italy and Germany.
