The British ensemble will perform works by Haydn, Beamish, and Mendelssohn on Thursday.
On Thursday (8 May) at 7.30 p.m., the Auditorio de Tenerife will host a British Elias String quartet concert. The performance, part of the Chamber Music Cycle, will offer a journey through works by Joseph Haydn, Sally Beamish, and Felix Mendelssohn.
The programme will begin with Haydn’s String Quartet in G major, Op. 54 No. 1, a four-movement work composed in 1788; it will continue with Sally Beamish’s String Quartet No. 3, Reed Stanzas, and conclude with all four movements of Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in A minor, Op. 13 No. 2.
The Elias String Quartet comprises Sarah Bitlloch and Donald Grant on violin, Simone van der Giessen on viola, and Marie Bitlloch on cello. Named after Mendelssohn’s oratorio, the Elias String Quartet has distinguished itself as one of the most dynamic and expressive ensembles of its generation. Formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, the Quartet worked with Christopher Rowland and later at the Hochschule in Cologne with the Alban Berg Quartet.
Renowned for their commitment to contemporary music, the Elias String Quartet has given premieres of works by composers including Emily Howard, Sally Beamish, Colin Matthews, Matthew Hindson, and Timo Andres. The Quartet was named a BBC New Generation Artist and received the Borletti-Buitoni Award in 2010. Their discography includes recordings of the Schumann and Dvořák piano quintets with Jonathan Biss, as well as French harp music with Sandrine Chatron and Alexander Goehr’s Piano Quintet alongside Daniel Becker. They have also recorded quartets by Britten and Mendelssohn, and the complete Beethoven quartets live at Wigmore Hall.
The Elias String Quartet has enjoyed collaborations in chamber music with renowned artists including Leon Fleisher, Robert Plane, Michael Collins, Ralph Kirshbaum, Ann Murray, Joan Rogers, and Mark Padmore, as well as ensembles such as the Jerusalem Quartet. Alongside their performance at the Auditorio de Tenerife, the Quartet has graced some of the world’s most esteemed concert halls, among them the Carnegie Hall, in Washington, the Vienna Musikverein, the Berlin Konzerthaus, and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.
