The fifteenth edition goes on until 6 June.

The Contemporary Music Festival kicks off a new edition this Sunday (1 June) at 7.30 pm. This year’s programme features five concerts held in the Chamber Hall of the Auditorio de Tenerife, including one with an educational focus. Launched in 2010 under the leadership of percussionist Paco Díaz, this event will continue until 6 June.

Opening the fifteenth edition of the festival, the FMUC Jazz Ensemble—comprising John Wooton, Paco Díaz, Francis Hernández, Ramón Ángel Rey, and Ruimán Martín—will present a concert that promises a fresh and unique musical experience. Their setlist of original pieces merges creativity, rhythm, and emotion.

The group’s unusual instrumental arrangement, which includes steelpan, vibraphone, bass, piano, and drums, creates a powerful and innovative soundscape, resulting in a rich and lively palette full of subtle details. The FMUC Jazz Ensemble’s members infuse the show with dynamic energy, spontaneous improvisation, and a strong sense of camaraderie on stage. Percussion students from the Higher Music Conservatory of the Canaries will join the performance.

The second event of FMUC 25 is scheduled for Monday (June 2), beginning at 7.30 p.m. It will feature ‘Boost Grupo de Percusión’, an ensemble consisting of three percussionists from Castilla-La Mancha: Antonio Martín, Roberto Fernández and Pablo Serí. The group is known for its eclectic repertoire of electronic, contemporary, classical and ethnic music. Its versatility and talent have garnered public and critical acclaim. This programme will also include the participation of percussion students from the Elementary School of the Professional Music Conservatoire of Tenerife.

Two FMUC activities are scheduled for Wednesday, June 4. The day will begin with an educational concert attended by 400 schoolchildren from various educational centres. In the evening, starting at 7.30 p.m., the premiere of Ecos—a piece commissioned by the Auditorio de Tenerife from composer Francis Hernández—will take place. Ecos is an instrumental suite based on the folklore of the Canary Islands, composed for the artisanal transversal flute known as ‘pito herreño’, steel drum, percussion ensemble and jazz trio. The work sets forth a rich connection to the archipelago’s cultural roots and diversity, producing a musical journey encompassing the islands and their folklore traditions. Melodies and rhythms are deconstructed and reconstructed in a contemporary setting, sailing the waters that separate academic music, folk and jazz. Students from the Higher Music Conservatory of the Canaries will participate in this event.

The fifteenth edition will close on Friday, 6 June, at 7.30 p.m. with a concerted dialogue featuring composers. The FMUC Contemporáneo Ensemble—Verónica Cagigao and Daniel Marín on percussion and Laura Gordo on piano—will provide the music, joined by percussion students from the Professional Music Conservatoire of the Canaries. Composers Gustavo Trujillo, Samuel Aguilar, Polo Ortí, and Laura Vega, whose works will be performed, will also share insights into their creative processes with the audience.

The tickets are available on the website www.auditoriodetenerife.com, at the auditorium’s box office or by dialling the phone number 902 317 327 from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are discounts for students, the unemployed and large families. There is an option to buy a subscription for all four concerts for a combined price of 30 euros.

Due to the Armed Forces Day events, access to the Auditorio de Tenerife will be restricted from 2 to 8 June, so the public is encouraged to arrive as early as possible. Please note that entry to the hall will not be permitted once the concert has started.
