The British artists will perform works by Clara and Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Franz Schubert next Thursday.
Within its lyrical season, the Auditorio de Tenerife offers a recital with tenor Mark Padmore and pianist Andrew West performing lieder by Clara and Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Franz Schubert. Ópera de Tenerife has programmed this event for Thursday, October 23, at 7.30 pm in the Chamber Hall.
As one of the most intimate vocal music traditions, the lied involves setting poetry to music, a practice popular among German Romantic poets. The recital given by Padmore and West covers a hundred years of compositions for voice and piano from German and Austrian creators.
The programme opens with Clara and Robert Schumann’s works, including pieces like I stood in Dark Dreams and The Minstrel, before moving on to Brahms with lieder such as All the Flowers Look. Following a 20-minute break, the recital resumes with works by Schubert, including pieces such as The Wanderer to the Moon, Rosamunde Romance, and Winter Night.
The tenor Mark Padmore’s interpretations of Bach’s Passions have been widely praised, particularly for his acclaimed role as the Evangelist in the St. Matthew and St. John Passions alongside the Berlin Philharmonic and Simon Rattle, in Peter Sellars’ theatrical productions. His residencies include being the solo vocal artist-in-residence at London’s Wigmore Hall, in addition to engagements with the Berlin Philharmonic and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Having collaborated with many of the UK’s foremost singers and instrumentalists, Andrew West worked extensively with flautist Emily Beynon for over two decades, performing at prestigious events such as the BBC Chamber Music Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival, as well as concerts throughout Europe. His discography features Lieder recordings with Emma Bell and Robert Murray. Andrew West acted as artistic director of the Nuremberg International Chamber Music Festival and made two guest appearances at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music.
Mark Padmore and Andrew West often perform as a duo, premiering Harrison Birtwistle’s Songs from the Same Earth at Aldeburgh and inaugurating the 2017 recital season at the Library of Congress with Schubert’s Schwanengesang.
