The Tenerife Theatre Schools are a project run by the Artistic Department of Auditorio de Tenerife, offering children, young people and adults a permanent space to engage with theatre through experience, creativity and collaborative work. The initiative goes beyond teaching stagecraft: it aims to foster an ongoing relationship with artistic practice and the creative process.
The project forms part of our ‘En Comunidad’ initiative, the framework through which the Artistic Department connects its activities with the local community and the wider region. From this perspective, theatre is understood as a cultural practice that encourages participation, interaction and collective creation. The Schools therefore broaden Auditorio de Tenerife’s relationship with its audiences, facilitating not only access to the performing arts, but also opportunities to practise and share them with others.
The sessions follow a practical, participatory and progressive methodology. Through theatrical play, physical and vocal work, improvisation, acting, character development and scene-building, pupils discover and develop the tools of theatrical language, adapted to the age, level and stage of development of each group.
Collective creation takes centre stage. Projects may draw on plays, adaptations, improvisations, personal experiences, topics of interest or the cultural and social context of the local area, transforming them into material for the stage. Pupils experiment, propose ideas, create, observe, listen and share, taking an active role at every stage of the process.
Theatre practice progressively fosters autonomy, cooperation, active listening, critical thinking and the ability to assess one’s own work and that of others from an artistic and constructive perspective. Progress is supported through formative assessment based on observation, reflection, self-assessment and group discussion, with particular attention to each participant’s process and development.
Throughout the course, creative projects, performances, specialist workshops and other performing arts experiences may be organised. As part of the Artistic Department of Auditorio de Tenerife, the Theatre Schools may also forge links with the venue’s programme and facilitate encounters with artists and professionals, introducing pupils to different ways of understanding and practising theatre.
No previous theatre experience is required. The programme is designed both for those taking their first steps in theatre and for those wishing to develop their practice further. It starts from each participant’s individual level and fosters artistic engagement grounded in creativity, experimentation, rigour and the enjoyment of creating with others.
What participants can expect
Taking part in the Theatre Schools means becoming part of a shared creative process. Participants are expected to take an active role, attend regularly, be willing to work as part of a group, respect the creative processes of others and show a growing commitment to the projects developed throughout the course. Each participant will have a space in which to learn by doing, develop their expressive abilities and become part of a community built around the shared experience of theatre.
