Juan de la Rubia

Born in La Vall d’Uixó, in the province of Castellón (Spain), Juan de la Rubia is the titular organist of the Basílica de la Sagrada Família in Barcelona.

He pursued his musical training in several European capitals, studying organ, piano and improvisation, the latter with Emilio Molina and Wolfgang Seifen. The honours he received on completing his studies, together with first prizes in the Juventudes Musicales de España Permanent Competition and the Primer Palau Competition, played a significant role in launching his career.

As a soloist, he has performed in many of the world’s leading concert halls and festivals across more than 30 countries. He has appeared both as soloist and conductor with distinguished ensembles including the Spanish National Orchestra, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, the ORCAM Orchestra and Choir of the Community of Madrid, the Symphony Orchestras of Galicia, Bilbao, the Principality of Asturias and Castile and León, as well as the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra.

In the field of historically informed performance, he has collaborated with Les Siècles and conducted both the Freiburger Barockorchester and the Orquesta Barroca de Tenerife. More recently, he founded his own ensemble, the Orquestra del Miracle, whose debut in June 2023 was met with widespread critical and public acclaim.

Juan de la Rubia has collaborated with distinguished artists including Matthias Goerne, Carolyn Sampson, Elena Obraztsova, Marta Mathéu and Philippe Jaroussky, with whom he recorded the Grammy Award-nominated album Sacred Cantatas (Erato, 2016). He also works regularly with Marco Mezquida on the improvisation-based project Bach&Forward.

He has developed a particular specialism in the live improvisation of soundtracks for silent films, performing alongside classics such as Faust and Nosferatu (F. W. Murnau), Metropolis (Fritz Lang), The General (Buster Keaton) and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Robert Wiene).
