DIABLAS Y DOMINADORAS
Synopsis
Artists Larisa Pérez Flores and Daniasa M. Curbelo participated in an artist residency at La Salita hall between 15 and 22 September 2025, culminating in this exhibition of their process titled Diablas y dominadoras.
Christianity took it upon itself to construct imagery that has portrayed femininity in a variety of roles, ranging from demonic to sacred. This was underpinned by gender archetypes appearing in narratives in which various figures, characters and beings embody the feminine otherness. How was this imagery developed in the Canary Islands, and what are its characteristics? Are there any fissures to be found in this story in the archipelago? We can answer these questions by observing the relationship between the “sacred-demonic” dualism and coloniality from a gender-based perspective.
