Misterio del Cristo de los Gascones
Synopsis
Auditorio de Tenerife has scheduled in its La Salita the show Misterio del Cristo de los Gascones, the most emblematic work from the long and dedicated career of theatrical troupe Nao d’amores. Since its formation in 2001, the troupe has successfully interpreted Spanish plays from the pre-Baroque period. Nao d’amores specialises in Medieval and Renaissance theatre and was chosen for the Spanish National Theatre Award in 2023.
Since its premiere in 2007, this play has received awards and has toured Europe and America. It delves deeply into Spain’s early theatre while offering spectators an absolutely contemporary vantage point. The play is a free adaptation of the religious ceremony performed at the San Justo church in Segovia during the Middle Ages. The ceremony culminated in the commissioning of the Cristo de los Gascones sculpture, among the most essential pieces of Spanish Romanesque religious art.
The work features a script based on historical texts from diverse sources, as well as the live performance of musical pieces composed based on research into the origins and nature of such religious ceremonies. The staging combines stage acting with puppet theatre, offering spectators a glimpse into the origins of modern theatre. A play that pays tribute to the uniquely Spanish form of ‘Living Heritage’, interpreted from an absolutely contemporary point of view.
There will be a discussion with the audience after Friday’s performance, moderated by students from the Canary Islands School of Acting, thanks to a collaboration agreement.
