Synopsis

Auditorio de Tenerife presents Dysphoria in its La Salita hall, directed by María Goiricelaya, of the company Histrión Teatro. After the performance on Friday the 22th, there will be a talk with the public moderated by the students of Canary Islands Acting School as part of a collaboration agreement with the Auditorio de Tenerife.

Dysphoria delivers a risk-taking, theatrical monologue. It spotlights Spain’s recently passed gender-identification legislation, exposes gender fraud, and confronts society’s drive to uphold the law’s sanctity.

The work challenges us to question our paradigms. It detonates our assumptions and forces us to confront how justice functions in a world where rights and liberties remain unequal.

She is shocked. Her 16-year-old daughter has just confided to her that she is actually a boy. From now on, she shall be known as Alex rather than Alejandra. Neither therapy nor awareness groups nor anything else will ever be enough for her to accept that her daughter will no longer be her daughter. Denial, resistance, and frustration emerge from the pain that accompanies change. However, things take an unforeseen turn when the police call at her door to accuse Alex of sexual abuse.

This unexpected event pushes our protagonist headlong into a frantic race to understand her son and to protect him from all that seeks to corner, destroy and rob him of his identity and his rights as a human being.
