The Sinfónica de Tenerife will perform this Hungarian score with a groundbreaking stage production signed by Pedro Chamizo

The Auditorio de Tenerife stages the debut of Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle this Saturday (25 April) at 19.30 p.m. in the Symphony Hall. Ópera de Tenerife’s fresh production delivers, courtesy of stage director Pedro Chamizo, a ground-breaking and modern take on the legendary tale’s protagonist. Tenerife Island Councillor for Cultural Affairs José Carlos Acha visited the progress of the set-up alongside Chamizo, set designer Víctor Longás, and Jorge Cabrera, the Auditorio’s Technical Production Director.

This version of Bluebeard’s Castle follows Bartók’s original musical structure but takes the idea a step further, offering an updated, visceral reading of the work. The story becomes an exploration of memory, body, trauma, desire, identity and internal oppression. Pedro Chamizo delivers a psychological thriller exploring identity, presenting the stage as an eerie, cinematic nowhere, a suspended mental landscape.

‘This castle embodies his mind, his body, his history,’ the director states, noting that ‘each door in the original tale unveils a deeper layer of his identity quest, transformation process, and enduring wounds.’ In essence, it probes ’the human drive to understand ourselves and whether love endures when truth surfaces.’

The Sinfónica de Tenerife, under Jordi Francés’s baton, will perform this celebrated Hungarian masterwork. Spanish baritone José Antonio López stars as Bluebeard, with Dutch mezzo-soprano Deirdre Angenent as Judit. Celeste González narrates, alongside Canary actresses Ylenia de Luis, Adriana Cortés, and Sobeida Gómez in the staging.

Costume designs are by Pier Paolo Alvaro and Roger Portal, with lighting by Víctor Longás and Pedro Chamizo, who also delivers the audio-visual design signature to his oeuvre.
