This daring monologue features Gema Matarranz, nominated for Best Actress in the Talía Awards
La Salita hall, Auditorio de Tenerife’s theatre programme, is presenting three shows of Dysphoria by Histrión Teatro this weekend. This risk-taking, theatrical monologue spotlights Spain’s recently passed gender-identification legislation, exposes gender fraud, and confronts society’s drive to uphold the law’s sanctity. The shows are scheduled for this Friday (22 May), and Saturday (23 May) at 7.30 p.m., while Sunday’s performance (24 May) will be at 12 noon. The performances on Friday and Saturday are fully sold out. The Friday session ends with a public talk moderated by students of the Canary Islands Actors School, in collaboration with the Auditorio de Tenerife.
Dysphoria, written and directed by María Goiricelaya for Histrión Teatro, is a piece that challenges established paradigms and forces us to confront how justice functions in a world where rights and liberties remain unequal.
The work opens with the protagonist in shock after her sixteen-year-old daughter confesses that she is not a girl; she is actually a boy. Neither therapy nor awareness groups nor anything else will ever be enough for her to accept that her daughter will no longer be her daughter. However, things take an unforeseen turn when the police call at her door to accuse her newly identified son of sexual abuse.
This unexpected event pushes the protagonist headlong into a frantic race to understand her son and to protect him from all that seeks to corner, destroy and rob him of his identity and his rights as a human being. Every character is embodied by Gema Matarranz, nominated for Best Leading Actress in Theatre at the Talía Awards 2026.
Tickets for Sunday’s performance can be purchased through the official website www.auditoriodetenerife.com, at the auditorium’s box office, or by dialling the phone number 902 317 327 from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The price is €8, with a reduced rate of €5 available for those under 30. La Salita’s next offering will be Terra do fogo, by Hotel Europa, with performances on 13 and 14 June.
