Antonio Najarro directs this co-production, with costumes by Yaiza Pinillos inspired by Néstor de la Torre.

Next week, the Auditorio de Tenerife hosts the national premiere of Les Ballets de La Argentina. Juerga, Triana and dance suite, on Thursday 4 and Saturday 6 at 7.30 p.m. in the Symphony Hall. The production features artistic direction and choreography by Antonio Najarro, with live music by the Sinfónica de Tenerifa orchestra. The show is a co-production of the Juan March Foundation, the Auditorio de Tenerife, the theatres Teatro de la Zarzuela and Teatro de la Maestranza, the International Dance and Music Festival of Granada, and Palau de les Arts of Valencia.

In 1929, Paris surrendered once more to the brilliance of Antonia Mercé, alias La Argentina. Through her Ballets Espagnols, she created a stage repertoire that combined tradition and avant-garde, in close collaboration with renowned Spanish composers and visual artists. Along with several dance numbers from La Argentina’s repertoire, this new project also recovers Julián Bautista’s Juerga and Isaac Albéniz’s Triana, two emblematic works that premiered to great acclaim in 1929.

For this production, Antonio Najarro has drawn inspiration from the original costume designs and stage scenery of Canary Islands painter Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre, among others. He has recreated the unique visual and musical aspects of both ballets, which are considered essential works in the configuration of a modern style of Spanish dance that seeks to be universal. Tenerife costume designer Yaiza Pinillos, drawing inspiration from the originals by her fellow Canarian, created the costumes for this production.

Thirteen dancers from Najarro’s company will take the stage under Carolina África’s direction. The Sinfónica de Tenerife orchestra will be led by Manuel Coves, an opera and dance specialist. In addition, guitarist Sohta Nakabayashi will appear as a guest musician.
