Coming Together

This programme occupies a distinctive place within the Freedom or Fate season. Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments presents a vision of freedom: music that rejects sentimentality and derives its expressive power from precision, rhythmic vitality and mechanical clarity of design. Here, the piano is not cast as a Romantic hero but an instrument of momentum, brilliance and relentless energy.

In Frederic Rzewski’s Coming Together, the words of an imprisoned man become the starting point for a process of obsessive repetition that gradually acquires overwhelming political, physical and human force. Language becomes rhythm, confinement becomes resonance, and freedom becomes an urgent question.

Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 concludes the programme with one of the masterpieces of the Classical repertoire. Its G minor is more than simply a key: it becomes a state of restless unease. Beneath Mozart’s formal clarity lies a dark, burning and deep human emotion.

Curtis Phill Hsu, winner of the Maria Canals International Music Competition, joins Jordi Francés in a programme that brings together rhythm, language and musical form, exploring three different ways of listening to freedom when fate already seems to have spoken.
