El príncipe Ígor
Synopsis
This programme draws on Borodin’s epic imagination and culminates in one of Dvorak’s most life-affirming symphonies. The overture to Prince Igor transports us to a world of sweeping narrative, orchestral colour and expansive melody, rooted in the great Russian Romantic tradition.
At the centre of the concert stands Francisco Coll’s new Trombone Concerto, performed by Ian Bousfield. Coll is one of the leading voices in contemporary composition; his music combines tension, timbral imagination and a theatrical energy turning every musical gesture into an event. The trombone, so often confined to the orchestral background, emerges here as the solo voice of remarkable expressive power.
Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 brings the programme to a close with music of generosity, warmth and openness. In contrast to the tragic visions of fates depicted elsewhere in this season, here freedom is heard as expansion, lyricism and a celebration of life.
