The course will be held until August 31 at the Auditorio de Tenerife with the backing of the Tenerife Island Council
The Auditorio de Tenerife hosted earlier today (Friday, 17 July) the presentation of the 17th Course for Conductors of Concert Bands, Orchestras and Choirs, promoted by the ‘Federación Tinerfeña de Bandas de Música’ (Tenerife Wind Bands Federation) in collaboration with the Tenerife Island Council. The activity, which runs until 31 July, includes a composition workshop led by Maestro José Suñer-Oriola and a concert by the Federation’s Insular Band in the Chamber Hall.
The opening ceremony was attended by José Carlos Acha, Councillor for Cultural Affairs; Members of the board of the ‘Federación Tinerfeña de Bandas de Música’ (Wind Bands Federation), led by its president, Juan Antonio Rancel, and the course coordinator, Vivian Gutiérrez.
Acha congratulated the participants on enrolling in the course and praised the Tenerife Wind Bands Federation for complementing its concert activity with a strong commitment to music education.
Vivian Gutiérrez noted that this activity ‘is not a conventional conducting course, since its primary purpose is to train a new generation of conductors’ adding that ‘around 70 per cent of participants in previous editions are now actively involved in the wind band world’.
Juan Antonio Rancel acknowledged that ‘this year’s edition is more ambitious, bringing together a larger teaching team and a broader programme of activities than ever before.” He also pointed out that this edition ‘will offer a more innovative outlook, as we will be sharing the course with students from a wide variety of instrumental backgrounds’.
Running until 31 July, the course is aimed at conductors of concert band, orchestra and ensemble, conducting students and professional musicians, regardless of previous experience. Practical sessions will involve the Federation’s Insular Band, the Tenerife Miguel Jaubert Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and a choir formed by the course participants. During the final week, Maestro José Suñer-Oriola will lead a composition workshop. The course will conclude on 31 July at 7.30 p.m. with a concert by the Federation Band in the Chamber Hall.
The collaboration between the council and the Federation also includes the ‘Primavera Musical’ cycle (Musical Spring Cycle) concerts series, which brings the Federation’s ensembles to perform at the Chamber Hall of Auditorio de Tenerife between March and June, as well as an annual gathering for the island’s youth ensembles.
