Participants in the free workshop will take part in ‘Selfi. Being Young in the Society of Spectacle’

Auditorio de Tenerife is inviting young people aged 11 to 15 to apply for a free theatre workshop. The programme comprises nine workshop sessions at La Salita, within the Auditorio de Tenerife, between 4 and 15 November, culminating in two public performances as part of La Salita’s programme: Saturday 14 November at 7.30 pm and Sunday 15 November at noon. Selfi. Ser joven en la sociedad del espectáculo (‘Selfi. Being Young in the Society of the Spectacle) is a project and performance led by Juan Ayala and Miguel Oyarzun, two performing arts professionals with extensive experience in community theatre.

The workshop is an interdisciplinary creative experience combining theatre, writing, dance, video and music. Those interested can register by emailing artesescenicas@auditoriodetenerife.com. Participation is free and no previous theatre experience is required, but places are limited.

The workshop aims to bring young people together in a multidisciplinary creative process. Each participant will be encouraged to share the artistic skills they already have, or would like to explore further — whether in music, theatre, voice or digital media — to create something collectively and, above all, have fun. Participants will have the opportunity to develop their artistic abilities and take an active role in a collaborative production.

The workshop explores what it means to be young today and how this generation navigates a world in which screens are increasingly present, both in and out of school, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction. It seeks to encourage young people to engage with the arts as a means of exploring and understanding the world around them.

During the first week, sessions will take place on Wednesday 4, Thursday 5 and Friday 6 November, from 4.30 pm to 8.00 pm, and on Saturday 7 November, from 10.30 am to 2.30 pm. In the second week, sessions will run from Monday 9 to Friday 13 November, from 4.30 pm to 8.00 pm. On Saturday 14 November, participants will attend from 4.30 pm to 9.00 pm for a rehearsal and the first performance at 7.30 pm. On Sunday 15 November, the session will run from 9.30 am to 1.00 pm, including a run-through and the second performance at noon.

Juan Ayala (Madrid, 1978) and Miguel Oyarzun (Madrid, 1983) have worked together since 2010, creating theatre, performance art and public events with and about the people involved. Their projects, bringing together professionals and members of the community, have been presented at Teatro Español, La Casa Encendida, Teatro de la Abadía and Matadero in Madrid, as well as at the Almagro Festival and Teatro Central in Seville, among other venues. Both have experience in production, curating, playwriting and stage design, and have worked internationally, particularly in the United Kingdom.

Tickets for performances of Selfi cost €8 (€5 for under-30s) and are available online at the website www.auditoriodetenerife.com, from the box office Monday to Friday, 10.00 am–5.00 pm, and Saturdays, 10.00 am–2.00 pm, or by telephone on 902 317 327 during the same hours.
