ALEXEI VOLODIN

Alexei Volodin is acclaimed for the extraordinary sensitivity of his touch and his technical command, qualities that have established him as today’s most demanded pianist by orchestras at the highest level. Volodin has a remarkably wide-ranging repertoire extends from Beethoven and Brahms through Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Scriabin, as well as the music of Shchedrin and Medtner.

Highlights of the 2025/26 season include performances across Europe, Asia and North America, with engagements in Canada, Israel, Greece, Japan, Spain, the Czech Republic, and China. His recital appearances have taken him to Vilnius, Winnipeg, Beijing’s NCPA, and Shanghai Concert Hall, showcasing both the breadth and versatility of his solo repertoire.

In recent seasons, Volodin has appeared with Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, NCPA Orchestra China, BBC Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Kyoto Symphony, Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, The Mariinsky Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, and St Petersburg Philharmonic. He has collaborated with conductors including Valery Gergiev, Semyon Bychkov, Stanislav Kochanovsky, and Robert Trevino.

As a recitalist, Volodin appears regularly at many world-wide leading concert halls, including the Wiener Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Barcelona’s Palau de la Música, the Mariinsky Theatre, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Madrid’s Auditorio Nacional de Música, and Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern.

As an active chamber musician, Volodin has developed long-standing artistic partnerships with musicians including Igor Levit, Claire Huangci, and Sol Gabetta. His chamber music collaborators have also included Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin, and Mischa Maisky, as well as the Borodin Quartet, Modigliani Quartet, Cuarteto Casals and Cremona Quartet. During the current season he appears in trio recitals with Ilya Gringolts, Alban Gerhardt, and Eldbjørg Hemsing while continuing his regular piano duo collaborations with Igor Levit, Claire Huangci, and his wife Edith Peña.

Volodin’s most recent recording for the Mariinsky label was Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.4, under Gergiev. Volodin’s disc of solo works by Rachmaninov, released by Challenge Classics, was issued in 2013. Other acclaimed recordings include a recital disc of works by Schumann, Ravel and Scriabin, while his earlier Chopin disc received a Choc de Classica and was awarded five stars by Diapason.

A regular artist at festivals, Volodin has performed at Kaposvár International Chamber Music Festival, Festival Les nuits du Château de la Moutte, Variations Musicales de Tannay, Bad Kissingen Sommer Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron, Les Rencontres Musicales d’Évian, Festival La Folle Journée, the White Nights Festival in St Petersburg, St. Magnus International Festival, Interharmony Festival, the Moscow Easter Festival, and Dresdner Musikfestspiele.

Born in Leningrad in 1977, Alexei Volodin studied at Moscow’s Gnessin Academy before continuing his training with Eliso Virsaladze at the Moscow Conservatoire. In 2001, he entered the International Piano Academy Lake Como, and gained international recognition following his victory at the International Géza Anda Competition in Zürich in 2003.
