Chago Melián

Chago Melián (Santiago Melián Suárez, Punta del Hidalgo, Tenerife) is one of the most emblematic and beloved voices of Canarian music. A singer and painter, he has forged a singular artistic career, combining musical sensitivity, Canarian roots and a profoundly creative vocation. His predilection for singing and the plastic arts became clear at a very young age, and he went on to study at the School of Fine Arts in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The turning point in his career arrived in 1979, when he won first prize for light song in the Spanish-TV talent show Gente Joven, which brought him to the attention of the general public.

Over the decades, Chago Melián has built up a repertoire of his own material as well as an immediately recognisable style with which he moves easily from canción melódica to popular Canarian music to fusion projects, all with his emotive approach and strong stage presence. He has performed in the Canary Islands and elsewhere and has shared the stage with acclaimed domestic and international artists. His recordings include the albums Anaga, Su canción, Sentimientos, Desde el corazón, Al Emigrante, Mis colores, Entre cuerdas and Canarias-Hawai, the latter being particularly significant for its musical and symbolic aspects.

Known for his warm vocals, the elegance of his performances and his close association with the public, he has received awards such as the Premio Artistas Canarios and the Premio Taburiente and is considered an indispensable part of the musical culture of the archipelago.
