La jácara de los cuerpos imposibles
I always imagine shows that I would like to see or pieces that I think someone has to see in order to experience a small revelation, a firm possibility or just to feel a moment of communion and beauty. Let this Jácara serve to broaden the world and make room in its new form for those of us who have never been challenged by the plays of the Spanish Golden Age. Although these stories have all manner of rich and beautiful diversity, they have always been told under the weight of rules, sweeping what is different under the rug.
In ‘Jácara de los cuerpos imposibles’, we bring all those stories into the light, we give them lustre and we glorify them. I have made it my mission to delve into our past and broaden history; to open spaces and connect the dots between historical periods as a living manifesto for all people with good will who understand that some of us live in the cracks, trying to understand each other in a world that seems oblivious to our stories, although we have always been here. Sometimes you know that person, sometimes you support that person and sometimes you are that person. This show is for each and every one of us.
Today, we take form; we challenge matter and time in a provocative cabaret designed by Ruth Rubio and stitched together by scenes of Calderón de la Barca, Ana Caro de Mallén, Guillén de Castro, Pérez de Montalbán and Lope de Vega. They are playwrights who have left an immense legacy to all us pariahs who see ourselves today reflected by their verses that we take as our own today in this bridge between the past and the future. For that is all we are: a bridge connecting emotions and bodies that someone once said were impossible; they did not exist; they were mythical animals. And, yet, here they are before you today. Breathing. Dancing. Being free.
