Liberty Bell

Freedom can ring out like a bell, ache like a wound, or unfold as a collective celebration. The three works in this programme, each shaped by a distinct musical language, explore memory, loss and the enduring affirmation of life.

The evening opens with Liberty Bell by Julia Wolfe, an American composer of striking rhythmic vitality and expressive power. Taking as its point of departure the iconic Liberty Bell—an enduring symbol of independence and democratic aspiration—, the work unfolds with directness, energy and unmistakably contemporary force. Within the framework of the season Freedom or Fate, it becomes both symbol and summons: music as memory, as shared experience and as a collective call.

At the emotional heart of the programme lies Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, To the Memory of an Angel, one of the twentieth century’s most profoundly moving works. Conceived as an elegy, it transforms grief into an architecture of extraordinary beauty, where modernist language coexists with deeply human expression. Francisco Fullana is the soloist in this deeply personal meditation on mourning, tenderness and transcendence.

Janáček’s Sinfonietta closes the evening with an entirely different energy: brilliant, expansive and almost ceremonial. Its dazzling brass writing, irresistible rhythmic drive and celebratory spirit make it a radiant affirmation of collective vitality. Under the direction of Ilan Volkov, the Sinfónica de Tenerife presents a programme that moves from symbolic resonance to intimate remembrance, and finally to the radiant affirmation of a community discovering itself through music.
