Mover montañas

Another piece about folklore? Well, yes! I actually can’t get enough of them. We have to talk about the need to bring dance, legends, and songs back to the villages, rather than treating them as objects for inventory and curation. A living manifesto of why ritual is needed to salvage a sinking society. An appeal to the collective conscience that, without knowing exactly why, is stirred by certain sounds, melodies, dances and rituals. An invocation to the primary emotion of what is known today as folklore.  In this work, you’re not going to find a catalogue of popular folklore. Through my body and my contemporary conscience, you’re going to discover a proclamation that is free of all that baggage.

In its current state, the essence of Iberian tradition has been manipulated to support or oppose certain territorial and ideological issues. Because I refuse to let politics condition my experience and connection with the original spirit, I live on folklore that runs through me, transcending borders and chronology. Tradition must be interpreted as something handed down naturally and fluidly through generations. A joyous oracle of encounter and communion. Tradition should not be in museums or archives but in the memory of villages, houses and patios, bodies and mouths, living in the transmission from one to another.

After the system’s bubble burst during the pandemic, humanity is once again looking to the countryside and rural settings. This renewed connection between people and nature should prompt us to revisit our origins from a new angle. Traditions do not belong only to these places, but their richness has been kept more vibrantly here. We need to reconnect with the natural order of life, and I believe that, at its core, folklore should be the soundtrack of this change.
