Quinta de Shostakovich

Few works capture the tension between freedom and fate as profoundly as Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Premiered under political surveillance and in the shadow of a real threat, the score has been interpreted for decades as a public statement, a veiled confession, a mask or an act of resistance. Its seemingly triumphant finale keeps on posing an unsettling question: does it celebrate victory, or does it reveal the cost of pretending to do so?

Delyana Lazarova, Artistic Collaborator with the Sinfónica de Tenerife, conducts this landmark masterpiece of the twentieth century.

The first half features Seong-Jin Cho, one of the most admired pianists of his generation, in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2. In this brilliant, uncompromising and technically formidable score, the work transforms the piano into an almost orchestral force.
